From convent to Casa de la Cultura: centuries of history in the heart of Tacoronte
Next to the Sanctuary of the Santísimo Cristo de los Dolores is the Old Convent of San Agustín, a building full of history that is an essential part of the heritage of Tacoronte. It was founded in the 17th century by the Augustinian Fathers, and for years it was an important religious and educational center.
With the disentailment of Mendizábal in the 19th century, the convent was expropriated and passed into public hands, forcing the religious order to abandon the place. Since then, the building has had multiple lives: it has been city hall, jail, public school, and currently houses the Casa de la Cultura de Tacoronte.
Today, far from its original function, the former convent is a space open to all, where workshops, exhibitions, concerts and cultural activities are held for neighbors and visitors.
A perfect place for those who wish to learn about the town’s past and, at the same time, immerse themselves in its vibrant cultural life today.
