Santuario del Santísimo Cristo de los Dolores (Sanctuary of the Most Holy Christ of Sorrows)

A sanctuary with history and devotion in the heart of Tacoronte

The Santuario del Santísimo Cristo de Tacoronte is much more than a temple: it is a symbol of the faith and history of the municipality. It was originally part of a convent belonging to the Augustinian order, active until the middle of the 19th century.

With the disentailment of 1837, which allowed the State to use former religious buildings for public purposes, the convent was closed. By then, the community of monks had almost disappeared. The former convent was used as the Town Hall, while the church began to depend on the parish of Santa Catalina Mártir.

Today, this sanctuary continues to be one of the most venerated places in Tacoronte, especially because of its connection with the Cristo de los Dolores, a figure deeply rooted in the popular devotion of Tenerife.

Festivity of the Santísimo Cristo de los Dolores (Holy Christ of Sorrows)

Every September, Tacoronte is transformed with the celebration of the Fiestas del Cristo, one of the most important religious and festive events of the municipality. The central moment is the procession of the Cristo de los Dolores, which goes through the main streets of the old town in an atmosphere of devotion, fervor and emotion.

In addition to religious events, the festival includes concerts, fairs, exhibitions and cultural activities for all audiences, making the city a meeting point between tradition, faith and celebration.
